Christmas gift updates

With Christmas gifts, I get to update and cross off a few things!

I'll do one for now (since I'm strapped on time)

31. Get coffee beans and grind my own coffee

I got a coffee grinder and two bags of coffee - one Irish Cream and one Amaretto. So far I'm working on the Irish Cream, and I can definitely tell that the coffee is a bit better when I grind it and brew it fresh. I also set a new sort-of goal of making coffee every morning when I work (so 3-ish days a week) and bringing it in with the new coffee travel mugs I bought, and so far I've done it every day.

New music

I've recently come across a lot of new music, so I should update my goal of getting new songs!

The Avett Brothers' I And Love And You (13 songs) - "Kick Drum Heart" is my favorite song right now, and I think my favorite song of the entire year.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela's 11:11 (11 songs) - I've always wanted more guitar-only music, and that's what they do, and they do it well.

Owl City's Ocean Eyes (12 songs) - He's from MN and "Fireflies" caught my attention too many times for me not to buy this CD, and it's good (even though it's a type of music I never though I'd enjoy).

Paramore's Brand New Eyes (11 songs) - Good but not great...not as good as their last one.

A Fine Frenzy's Bomb in the Birdcage (11 songs) - A bit different sound than her last album, but still good.

Pearl Jam's Backspacer (11 songs) - Solid PJ CD as always. "Just Breathe" is my favorite song on the CD.

Total of 69 new songs, to bring my total from 86/360 to ... ugh, math in my head...155/360? Yeah, 155/360. Almost halfway there!

Updates...omg, updates

Alright, I've been putting this off for far too long. Time to update.

#4 - Play frisbee golf - I got some frisbee golf discs for my birthday in August, and sometime in I think September, Amanda and I went to the course in St. Cloud. It was fun, and I have to do it more next year.

#9 - Run 15k in races - I ran the Anoka Halloween 5k race. I put off training for far too long, but I managed to finish in 33 minutes. Horrible, yes, I know. But for the shape I'm in, I was happy just to finish, and to not throw up.

#17 - Buy a new pair of jeans - I've purchased two new pairs of jeans since I've updated this. I've looked for another pair, though I can't find the pair that's just perfect. I'm super picky when picking out jeans.

#22 - Get a digital camera - I'm cheating on this one, but since I got my new phone a few days ago, I think it'll suffice. It's got a 3 megapixel camera on it, and it takes really good pictures.

#26 - Get a new desk - Luckily I didn't say "buy a new desk," because I started using my old dining room table as my computer desk (it's a 3'x3' table that's well, about 3' tall), and I use my La-z-boy as my desk chair. It's freakin' sweet.

#27 - Get a new futon frame or sofa - I got a "new to me" sofa. It was free, and it does what a sofa should do.

#45 - Wake up before 7:30 a.m. at least 75 times a year - I'm doing some guesswork here, but to be on the safe side, let's just say I've done it 10 times since I last updated.

#53 - Do all my paper filing at work - this one's in progress...I made a huge step today at work and finished the first big hurdle of my paper filing, and I finished everything that I had let build up for the past 6 or so months...now I just have to finish the recent stuff.

#56 Fix 5 things with duct tape - I "fixed" my old pair of glasses, and even though there's duct tape holding them together, I wear them more than my other pair because I can see a ton better with them. I can barely make out my computer screen with my old crappy glasses.

#68 - Read 6 books - I've read all 7 Harry Potter books, some of them multiple times through now...so this one's complete.

#69 - Rearrange my room three times - I've done this probably 3 or 4 times actually...it's been fun. I have a pretty sweet setup right now I think. This one's completed.

#73 - Vacuum my room 18 times - I know I've vacuumed at least three times so far.

#77 - Watch 5 Timberwolves games a year - I've watched two so far...they're kind of painful to watch this season. :-(

#78 - Watch 8 Vikings games a year - I've watched somewhere between 6 and 8 games for sure. I'll say 6 to be safe. But I almost always watch them, they're very exciting this year and we have a good shot at the Super Bowl if Brett Favre stays healthy.

#79 - Win 3 free shirts - I won a free UFC t-shirt at BWW's when I went there for the Brock Lesner fight awhile ago. I "won" a free t-shirt at my new favorite bar, Lincoln Depot (or is it Lincoln Station? I always forget). Well, you get a free t-shirt for buying 2 of these Minnesota-made hard lemonades that weren't very good, but I'm counting it towards this goal.

Ok, there's all my updates. Hopefully I'll be updating more often than once every three-four months! >.< I still have to figure out if I can / how to post stuff on here from my phone, because I just got a phone with unlimited data stuff, so I'm finding out all the cool things that I can do now.

Paperless billing / AT&T Wireless annoyances

I went to go pay my cell phone bill - and I'll start off on a positive note - I love how easy it is to do with AT&T to pay my bill. I get the bill in the mail, I log on, I hit "Make a Payment" then click "ok" or whatever and I take a screenshot and save it in case I need proof...done and done. Quite easy. Ok, now that I started off on a positive note, here goes with my rant.

How come every time I log onto any site dealing with bills or banking, right after logging on, they have to try and sell me on paperless banking/billing? I think paperless banking/billing is a good idea but I hate the fact that I have to reject it EVERY TIME. And maybe if they didn't try to sell it to me as a way to be more green and to save trees and crap, I'd do it. I know that the main reason they try to get me to do it is because it would save them money, so I reject it out of spite. If you want to do it to save money, give me something for doing it instead of trying to make me feel like I'm doing the "right thing" and being green. Give me a $0.25 credit toward my account each month, or $5 right now, or something. If you give me the option and it saves you money while I get nothing in return, why should I change what's already working for me?

Secondly, I hate how AT&T Wireless (and I have a feeling this will carry over to other cell phone companies) hides things from their customers. The last time I signed a 2 year contract, I practically had to beg them to let me onto a cheaper phone plan, because I didn't use even half my minutes, and they I finally got them to give me a cheaper, unadvertised plan only because I had been with them (as AT&T, then Cingular, then AT&T again) so long. Now that my previous 2 year contract is done, I have the distinct pleasure of having to do this again. I need to get a new phone and I need to ask about getting a better texting plan, as I tend to run over my plan (200 texts/month) by 10 or 20, so it would be nice to have 300 to 500 texts a month. However, they only advertise 200/month, 1500/month, or unlimited, which I have a feeling is exactly what they're going to say when I ask if they have a 500/month plan. I just wish they'd be more transparent with the available options, instead of only showing what likely will make them the most money.

Updates

6. Play volleyball
I played volleyball last Monday with 6 other people and we're trying to get together every week to do it now too, which I hope works out, because volleyball's a pretty fun game

10. Take Neilly for a walk 20 times a year (2/20)
Amanda and I took Neilly to a park for my grandma's birthday celebration and took her for a walk around while Amanda got to take some great pictures with her fancy camera and and finish off the roll of black and white film.

68. Read 6 books (5/6)
Just about an hour ago I finished up the fifth Harry Potter book - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I just wish I had the 6th book to read, but I'm asking for it for my birthday, so I'll be Harry Potterless for at least 6 more days. :-(

79. Win 3 free t-shirts (1/3)
A few weeks ago I went to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the Brock Lesnar UFC fight, and they had us fill out a little thing with our name on it for drawings, and I ended up winning a free UFC t-shirt. Sweet! Not that I'll wear it a whole lot, cuz I'm not so big of a UFC fan that I'd display it on a t-shirt, but it is comfortable and works well as an undershirt.

Google Voice!

Google Voice!

I heard about Google Voice (GV) 6 months or so ago, and I was hooked right then and there. Everything Google does seems to be amazing, so I signed up to be emailed when GV service became active. Well, they just started sending out invitations to those who signed up, and I jumped at the chance. I found the perfect phone number, which is what sold me from the starting gate - I got to choose my phone number out of tons of choices, and they let you search for certain strings of numbers to help you find the number you want. I couldn't imagine a better phone number than the one I got.

Features I like (FYI, I don't get phone reception where I work)
  • You get to pick your phone number
  • I know if I have voicemails while I'm at work
  • I can listen to voicemails while I'm at work
  • I know if I have text messages while I'm at work
  • I can send/receive/reply to text messages while I'm at work
  • I can send text messages for free (ones that won't count towards my monthly amount of texts I'm allowed under my plan), so this essentially gives me one and a half to two times the amount of texts I get per month, because a lot of my texting is done while I'm at home in my room because I don't get that great of reception there either
  • Cheap international calls if I ever need them (would have been nice for when Amanda was in Germany)
  • Gives me further incentive to be logged into Google all the time and use their programs - although this has been a shift that's been happening anyway with Gmail, Blogger, Docs, Calendar and now Voice...all great programs that do what they need to do
  • This phone number will stay with me no matter what - if I change cell phone numbers, or get a house phone, or get my own personal work phone number, I can add those as I want, but I'll always have my GV number and that's the main number other people need to know to get in contact with me

Things I don't like:
  • The hassle that comes with a new phone number and having to give it out to everyone (but don't get me wrong, I'm sooo happy with my new phone number)
  • The even bigger hassle of having to explain to people that this is a new number but it's not replacing my cell phone number, and that they need to put my GV number in as their main number but keep my cell phone number as a secondary number so that when I call/text them from my cell phone, I will still show up on their caller ID
  • The fact that nobody is sure what will happen in the future with GV - it's almost all free, and because of this there's not much revenue for Google, so they'll need to find ways to make money off of this. Some speculate that they could charge for phone calls made through GV, but most people are speculating that they'll be including targeted ads in at some point in the future instead

But yeah, if you can't tell, I'm wicked excited about Google Voice, and after playing around with it a ton for a day...so far so good.

Lots to update!

Well, with me being too lazy to post a blog for this long, there's understandably lots to update! I've been keeping up on working towards completing my goals, I just keep putting off posting them on the blog. :-\ Anyway, here goes...

5. Play tennis once a year
8. Ride my bike to school or work 15 times
10. Take Neilly for a walk 20 times a year
19. Buy those elusive marker pens I love from work
45. Wake up before 7:30 a.m. at least 75 times a year
52. Find the perfect boxers, and buy 10 pairs of them
59. Get 10 new shot glasses
68. Read 6 books
75. Watch 20 Twins games a year
82. Go on a vacation out of the state
85. Go to a Twins in a state other than Minnesota
91. Get at least 360 new songs
97. Watch every Matrix movie

5. Play tennis once a year
Amanda and I went to play tennis at AR...we brought Neilly, it was fun and some good exercise on a hot day.

8. Ride my bike to school or work 15 times (1/15)
My car broke down, and the only way I could work was to bike there, so I dropped my car off at the shop and biked to work at 7:45 a.m.

10. Take Neilly for a walk 20 times a year (1/20)
I finally got Neilly out for a walk - after biking back home I walked her to the auto shop to pick up my car.

19. Buy those elusive marker pens I love from work
Amanda had a keen eye in Target in Kansas City and noticed they had the pens I love, so I bought 4 of the black ones.

45. Wake up before 7:30 a.m. at least 75 times a year (10/75)
Honestly I'm guessing that I've done this 7 times since my last post. I do this every Friday when I work, plus I did it once on our trip cuz I had a headache and couldn't get back to sleep all that well (well, I was in bed, but I was awake, and that totally counts). Anyway, I have a feeling that I'll be changing this goal because I don't like it anymore.

52. Find the perfect boxers, and buy 10 pairs of them (6/10)
I've found them, and I now own 6 of them. They're awesome.

59. Get 10 new shot glasses (1/10)
I bought a Kansas City shot glass from a souveneir shop at the city market place we went to.

68. Read 6 books (2/6)
I've been itching to watch all the Harry Potter movies because of the new one coming out, so I decided to dig up my Harry Potter books for the trip to KC - I read the first two and I'm about halfway through the third one now. I think I'm going to Netflix the movies as I read through the books, or maybe just buy the DVDs...I just have to get my hands on the last two books which I haven't read yet.

75. Watch 20 Twins games a year (6/20)
I saw one game in person in KC and one game on TV in the hotel in KC with Amanda and Taylor.

82. Go on a vacation out of the state
This vacation to Kansas City was sooooo needed, and I had a blast. The driving sucked (though it wasn't all that bad really), but it was great just having a few days to relax and get away from work and home and everything.

85. Go to a Twins in a state other than Minnesota
We saw the Twins play in KC. Their stadium was awesome. Seeing a game outside like it's supposed to be makes me really eager to see the Twins in our new stadium next year.

91. Get at least 360 new songs (86/360)
I got a bunch of free song download cards, and I got 68 new songs - something I needed desperately. Some of the new music includes: Taylor Swift (for Amanda), Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse, Incubus, and Keith Urban. All this new music has me craving more...there's a good 75 or 100 more songs I want to get now, but I'll probably put off because I don't want to spend the money on them and I don't want to illegally download songs.

97. Watch every Matrix movie
A few weeks ago or so, I was at Target and saw that they had a $10 DVD set for all the Matrix movies, so I bought it and watched all of them. I remember when I first saw them I was disappointed by the second and third movies because the first one was so good. On the second time around, my opinion didn't change - the first one was the best, but the second and third weren't as bad as I thought.

Best advice column ever

http://www.slate.com/id/2218711/

I don't have any updates on the 101 in 1001, but I just read the single best advice column ever.

A reporter was on a company laptop that other people use and found explicit photos of her boss's high school daughter. She deleted the pictures and wrote in to the advice column asking if she should tell her boss. The advice column lady's response was overly nice, trying not to make the reporter feel like too much of an idiot, but basically tells the lady that she should look into going into a new career because she sucks at being a reporter. She randomly stumbled on what could have possibly been the news story of her career (what if there was something disturbing going on with her father?), and her first instinct is to delete the pictures? I lol'd.

Batman baskets, stereo in stereo sound finally, and Green Day sings the songs of my life

#20 Get some sort of organizer for my remotes
I forgot I did this already - I went to Target after Easter to check out the clearance stuff, and I snagged an awesome Batman Easter basket for $5 that works perfectly for holding my remotes.

#57 - Fix my receiver/stereo situation so that it works right
My stereo situation was never really set up right when I bought a receiver a few years ago, and I realized a few months ago that my CD player was only playing through one speaker, even though my DVD player would play through both. So I overhauled my setup, decided to stop using the 2nd TV since I haven't really "needed" both of them at once in a long time, if ever. So I set it up right, and decided to not even bother with surround sound and just use my two main big speakers, and I ran everything through the receiver. It'll be annoying without a receiver remote for now, but I love it. It looks better too.

#91 - Get at least 360 new songs (18/360)
I bought the new Green Day CD after seeing them on SNL last weekend. All I can say is I love Green Day. I've never really thought of them as one of my favorite top 5 bands or anything, but they continue to make amazing CD's that I always love. There's so many good songs on here, but "Horshoes and Handgrenades" is the best song I've heard in a long time. Granted, part of me loves it purely because of the song title because I remember hearing the saying, "close only counts in horshoes and hand grenades" as a kid, I think from my dad.

Two more updates

#69 - Rearrange my room three times (1/3)
I totally forgot I did this. I moved some stuff around, made way better use of the space in my room...namely, I decided that having the weight bench take up so much space when I use it maybe once a year is pointless, and I am now using it as furniture to hold up my coffee table, on which sits a chest of three drawers, on which sits an old tv stand that I use to hold random stuff like my Wii games, picture frames, and my alarm clock.

#89 - Beat 15 video games (1/15)
I did this a couple weeks ago...I downloaded Super Punch-Out on my Wii because I've been pretty excited that they're making a new one for Wii, and I beat it. It was actually pretty hard for a Super Nintendo game...I was stuck on Rick and Nick Bruiser for a couple days and it was frustrating. But I got 'em!

Updates!

Lots to update...

#24 - Get a Kohl's credit card
I just went to my eye exam and got some new contacts and decided to go to Kohl's afterward...I went, and I had like $100 worth of stuff (long sleeve button up shirt, t-shirt, gray khaki pants & white-plad shorts for the summer) so I decided it was finally time to apply for the Kohl's credit card so I could get 15% off. Then I "won" a 20% off coupon for their current sale, so I got to use that instead, and the lady said I could save the 15% off coupon for the credit card, so that's awesome. Seeing as how I do 90 to 99% of my clothes shopping at Kohl's, I think getting a credit card there is pretty safe.

#40 - For two weeks, drink zero pop
I started this on Tuesday, 4/27/09. It wasn't even that hard, which is surprising because I was drinking a ton of pop - at least two cans a day...usually three, sometimes four or more! Anyways, I gave myself some leniency on this one. One day near the end of it I accidentally took a few sips of some Mello Yellow at Subway with Amanda, because it was my turn to buy the pop and chips/cookies when we went there for lunch one day. But I realized it and stopped drinking it. Plus I allowed myself to drink Four and Joose energy/alcohol drinks, and energy drinks, and sour (as in vodka sours, my drink of choice for the past 2-3 weeks)...so that helped. I did it though, and I'm happy, because pop is wicked bad for you, especially the way I was drinking it.

#45 - Wake up before 7:30 a.m. at least 75 times a year (3/75)
I made this goal in the hopes that it would get me to wake up early sometimes, even when I don't need to. I'm not really sure if I'll be able to do this one though. I at least get one of these every week because I work at 8am on Fridays, but that means I gotta find a way to do that 25 or so other days a year.

#48 - Weigh 225 lbs.
I'm not shooting for this one just yet. I'm just trying to be healthier first, then I'll go for the actual weight goals. Healthiness is more important anyway, this is just a way to put a sorta relevant number on it. I don't know how much I weigh, nor do I want to until I actually set out to lose weight.

#52 - Find the perfect boxers, and buy 10 pairs of them (2/10)
I'm pretty sure I've found them. They seem to be working quite well. They're from Target, cost like $5 each. I'm going to give the first 2 some more trial time before I decide that these are the right ones. :-)

#56 - Fix 5 things with duct tape (1/5, fixed my lanyard for my work ID)
Yep...my ID card lanyard wasn't working the way it should (it's hard to explain)...so I fixed it with duct tape.

#70 - Save $x money
I don't know what my goal is for saving money yet...might be $500, might be $5,000, might be $20,000...we'll see. I've been doing pretty well at this, although there are certain things I could do to save more.

#75 - Watch 20 Twins games a year (4/20)
I'm allowing myself to count the games I watched before I officially started this list, lol. Plus I watched the game yesterday. We lost, Joe Nathan blew the save. :-(

#93 - Watch Chuck season 1 (3 discs down, 1 or 2 to go - I'm netflixing them)
This show is pretty awesome - it may have cracked my top ten favorite tv shows list, and it's one of my favorites that is still on TV. One or two discs to go.

#55

#55. Finish this list

Done!

That took embarassingly too long. But I wanted to take my time on it, make it last longer so I had to think about what I wanted longer so I could perfect my list.

Getting started

Initially I wanted to have this done by April 1st...wow time flies. So I got it done by May 1st...that works. The basic idea for this is to make myself a better person, so I tried to focus on that... I want to be healthier, to be more independent, to be more organized, to have some better things, to be more rounded, etc., so these goals should reflect that.

I've been working on some of these goals already, and achieved a few already. However because I want this to be pretty legitimate and everything, I'm going to start officially as of now, May 1st, 2009. I may have to redo a few goals to accomodate this (such as get a new futon or sofa, since I already got a new sofa and obviously don't care about getting a new one anytime soon), but I should be good to go.

Some of the goals fit into several categories, but I categorized them as best I could. Some are easy, some are hard (I'm lookin' at you #36, #41, #42 and #45), some are short-term, some are long-term, some are to do something once, some are to do something a lot, but all of them are reachable. I think I'll for sure get 90 to 95, but a few are iffy. I'll try, but we'll see.

Good luck to me. :-)

Progress

I haven't organized my list as I need to - I keep putting it off. I'm putting it on my in-my-head to-do list for today, tonight, or tomorrow.

But I've been getting a lot of things done, that's for sure:
-Finished my list
-Went to a Twins game
-Watched a Twins game
-Vacuumed my room
-Rearranged my room
-Played whiffleball
-I think I found the perfect boxers, bought 2 of them (I have 4 of them total now...its so nice not having to do laundry every 4 or 5 days so I can have my favorite pairs clean cuz I now have like 7 or 8 I like, lol)
-Got a new sofa to replace my futon (the frame was getting bent horribly, it was only time before it snapped)
-Saw the first 4 episodes of Chuck season 1, next disc is on its way (Netflix rules), might be one of my new favorite tv shows

I think that's all.

Oh and I realized that Ed (the tv show about a bowling alley-lawyer) is not on DVD, so I may not be able to do that one (or I'll just have to see about getting it via other methods).
